George Lewis Jr. is a master of reinvention. Known under the moniker Twin Shadow, Lewis Jr. has spent the last decade releasing an ever-evolving catalog of music while maintaining the sonic thrust and piercing lyrics that initially spurred his rise. After the last few years, which saw him achieve critical and commercial success, a slew of domestic and world tours, a deal with Warner Music Group, and even a DJ role on the vaunted Grand Theft Auto V video game, the burning question is: where does he go from here?

The answer for Lewis Jr. doesn’t lie within the typical American ethos of ‘bigger, better, more,’ but instead is a decidedly more introspective and heartfelt approach to his future. Lewis Jr. parted ways with Warner Music Group to form his own label, Cheree Cheree, with the intent of focusing on producing music at his own pace and fostering up-and-coming talent. He’s also moved away from the grandiose sound and feature-filled approach of his 2018 release ‘Caer’ to explore the brighter Bachata sounds of his Dominican Republic heritage. These moves lend themselves to Lewis Jr.'s approach towards not only music but every aspect of his life, a move inward.

“I’m the type of person that always needs to be working on something, or else I start feeling anxious,” says Lewis Jr. as he shows us a guitar he’d hand-built during quarantine. At heart, Lewis Jr. is a student, someone who finds as much joy in learning how to create as he does in creating. This desire to never be stagnant is pervasive in every aspect of his life, whether it be his living room pillows he hand-sewed, the motorcycle he’s rebuilding in his garage, or his upcoming album that he played virtually every instrument on.

In a modern music industry that’s becoming increasingly influenced by TikTok trends and seedy algorithms perhaps we all need to follow Lewis Jr.'s lead and reexamine what it is we love about music and creation in the first place, the process.
